Coach Brent Venables was introduced as the new defensive coordinator at Clemson University on Friday afternoon. The announcement came after a great deal of drama throughout the week as rumors ran rampant through Tiger Town. Coach Venables was very impressive in his first press conference and appeared relaxed and confident. He feels that he and Coach Swinney share a vision of success, a vision of championships.
A few notes from the press conference.
- Coach Venables said his first focus would be where it all starts... up front on the D-line.
- He wants his linebackers to play downhill.
- Venables described his philosophy as "an atmosphere and culture of being physically tougher than your opponent"
- He wants to put a lot of pressure on the QB and make people predictable.
- "4th down, its nut-cuttin time. Go after him. Don't drop eight.
- Venables says that anyone who assumes he left because of Mike Stoops clearly do not know his relationship with the Stoops. He claims that he personally recruited Mike into coming back to Oklahoma and the guy would give him the shirt off his back.
- Venables says the needle is pointing up and there couldn't be a better time to be at Clemson.
- CBV, "We will win. I have confidence in that."
- Dabo Swinney say Clemson has the most "dynamic" staff in the country.
- Coach Swinney says Art Briles told him Thursday night that he has the two best coordinators in the country. (Maybe he is just glad the he no longer has to worry about Venables' defense)
- Coach Swinney said Venables was a "grand slam" while others would have just been a homerun.
